The grounds, known in ancient times as Castrum Nogne, were under the jurisdiction of the monastery of San Benedetto Vecchio.
In 1259 the town of Gubbio asked the abbot of the monastery to house a garrison in the castle during the war with Perugia. In 1283, with the garrison still there, Abbot Bonus asked for 6000 pounds in the currency in use then, to compensate for the lack of payment for their stay.
In 1327 Mattiolo di Ventura was put in charge of the reparation and defense of the castles towards Pietralunga, including Nogne. Several commanders spent time on its defense: Gianisius from Cesena (1411), Vanutius from Cascia (1416-17), Nicolaus alias Spoletino from Spoleto (1431-32, also 1433), Antonio Scaramuccia from Fermo (March 1432), Petrus Pocce from Gubbio (November 1432), Nanne Cennis de Pecorariis, Ventura Augustini de Villa Nerbisci and Iohannes Teutonicus (December 1432). In 1421 Matteo and Giovanni Guidi of Città di Castello, lords of Montegranelli, lived there.
